Iztaccihutal, also known as Izta or Mujer Dormida (sleeping lady), with its 5220m (17,130 ft) is the third highest mountain in Mexico. It consists of six craters what make it difficult to realize that you are on a huge volcano while climbing it. Nevertheless, its peculiar forms and the proximity of the imposing Popocatepetl volcano or Popo, which is active and always smoking, turns its climb into any photographer’s delight.

The Climb

Climbing Iztaccihuatl can be split into two days or if you are in good conditions just in one. Also, the route, called “Los Portillos” has also two main sections:
The first section goes from the car park “La Joya” (3.900 m – 12.800 ft) to the hut named “de los Cien”. The way to the hut goes sort of edging from the Mexico state valley side to the Puebla state valley side and back to Mexico side and so on. Every time we go from one side to the other it’s called “Portillo”. The last one is the fourth Portillo just before a short descent to the hut.
The second section begins with the hardest part of the climb, from the hut to the “knees” at 5.000 m (16.400ft). After a while we reach the Paza Glacier (Belly) and not long after we find ourselves standing on the summit just above the “Pecho” Glacier (Breast)

In addition, in case our field experience  is not enough, our guides have the following international backing in knowledge and practices in high mountains:

- Training in Mountaineering and Mountain Rescue techniques taught by instructors from the AGMP (Mountain Guides Association of Peru) belonging to and with UIAGM standards (International Union of Mountain Guides Associations)

- International First Aid Certification in remote places given by ECSI (Emergency Care & Safty Institue)

More about Iztaccihuatl...

Since the volcanic activity Popo began in 1994 with its subsequent closure, Izta has become one of the most popular volcanoes and quite often serves a dual purpose according to the interests and mountaineer level:

• on the one hand is the target and challenge of many mountaineers who wish to overcome the barrier of 5000 meters (16400 ft)
• and on the other hand serves as excellent training and acclimatization to try the highest and most challenging Pico de Orizaba. Iztaccihuatl will tell you whether you have the sufficient physical, technical and mental skills to climb it.
